I have been asked this question by a few of my clients, so i thought I would just post the answer here for everyone.
I started of as just a snapshot mom. taking hundreds of pictures of my children :). One day i came upon a website and the quality of images that i saw sent me in awe! They were all amazing! I started thinking, "I need to learn how to take such awesome pictures!" lol. I got curious and submitted questions to a few of the photographers. Some of the responses scared me but i was determined. One gave me the impression it was easy and all i needed was a professional grade camera..ha! let me tell you this, It is not that easy!
Anyway, I got my new camera, started reading up on photography, then put all that i learned into practice "on my kids" oh the torture for them! lol.
And when they got tired of me (lol), Well that and I needed variety for my portfolio. I started offering free photo shoots to everyone.
